Science Within Reach: Who, What, Where, When and Why?

What: Science Within Reach is a new enterprise devoted to improving science education at all levels.

Why: There are several motivations for using physical models:

  • as pedagogic tools for students or those unfamiliar with atomistic structures
  • as objects to generate or test theories (e.g., the structure of DNA)
  • as analogue computers (e.g., for measuring distances and angles in flexible systems)
  • as aesthetically pleasing objects on the boundary of art and science
  • affordable and portable
  • immediate tactile and visual messaging
  • easy interactivity for many processes

Where: We are located in San Diego, CA.

Who:

Professor and founding director of the Molecular Graphics lab at The Scripps Research Institute, Arthur is a pioneer in the analysis and visualization of biological assemblies. Arthur's latest work focuses on the development of intuitive human interfaces for research and education utilizing 3D printed models and augmented reality technologies.
